Sister Ruth

My precious mother-in-law, Ruth Stocktill, is in her last days here with us on Earth. What an incredible example she has been to women all over the world! For years, she kept our six children every Saturday so that I could maintain my sanity and she her treasured place of “Mimi.” More times than I can count, Bro. Roy would say of her after one of her delicious Mississippi meals, “Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou exellest them all” (Prov.31:29). She is the Proverbs 31 lady of all times! Incidentally, our home for unwed mothers for over twenty years was called the House of Ruth in her honor. She has quite a legacy and so do you if you will remain faithful in being the mother, wife, and/or friend God has equipped you to be. Thank you for praying for Bro. Roy.

  1. Malinda Says:

    Sister Melanie,
I tell everyone who will listen that I am still married today (dated for 10 years and married for 16 years) because there is not a Sunday that I go to church that I am not taught how to “stay married” and how to parent. Thank you Sister Ruth for raising such a son. Thank you Sister Melanie for your quiet strength, your wisdom and most important your example. Praying for you all!

  2. Ms. B Says:

Sister Ruth has been a true mentor and friend for years for me personally and to all of my family. She has always been an encourager and I was honored to serve at the House of Ruth (12 years) for many reason but certainly because it was named as a tribute to Sister Ruth. Only will we know in eternity what legacy she will leave here on earth. She has always been a server and looking for ways to serve others whether through Loaves & Fishes or preparing a meal for someone that was ill. What a “First Lady” she has always been, I am honored to have known her all of these years and I cherish the chats that we had through the years. How fitting that her name means, Compassionate, Beautiful and that her character quality for her name is Compassionate. Her lifetime scripture is: Prov. 31:20 “She opens her palm to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy”. This scripture says it all it decribes, Sister Ruth.

    Be blessed.

Words cannot express the honor this lady deserves. She’s probably still talking to all the folks she influenced in Heaven and there’s a loooooooong line waiting! Thank you precious Sister Ruth for setting such an example in love and purity in faith. Bro. Roy truly would not have been all that he is without this amazing lady in his life. She will be missed but her legacy will live on forever multiplying until He comes for His own. Our love and prayers are with you dear Stockstills. Sincerely, Mark and Connie Williams

    Dear Melanie,
I am sorry to hear of Ruth’s leaving your family. She was a wonderful woman. I know that your family will miss her. I have lived away from LA (now I live in MI) for 25 years, but I think of her often. She and Pastor Roy were such Godly and kind people.

  12. Bill Cribbs Says:

I remember when, as a young teen, I used to work at Bethany when it was called “Bethany Baptist Church” during all of the conventions during the ’70s. It was such a privilege to be exposed to the holy lives of Sister Ruth and the Stockstill family. Sister Ruth was such an awesome example of a godly wife and mother! I remember when Bro. Larry and Sis. Melanie were courting…how they sat 10 inches apart with their hands on their own laps in the foyer of their home. It was such a holy example to me that I will never forget. But this came from the incredible teaching and parenting of Bro. Roy and Sis. Ruth Stockstill. What a legacy that the Stockstill family holds in the Kingdom of God!
    I love your family.
